PodCast & Online: Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God
If you’d like to hear my rendition of Jonathan Edwards’ classic sermon, which I preached at four services last weekend, we have permission from the publisher to make it available online for 30 days.
This is a contemporary version by author John Jefferey Fanella, and has been lauded by John MacArthur and R.C. Sproul. This is of the 10:45 service, where I was quite surprised at the altar call (read the full account by starting here).
You can get the PodCast by clicking here!
Click here and go to the sermon dated July 27, 2008. You will have your choice of Quicktime or MP3. I’d love your feedback, too. (Be patient as you download the file; it is large.)
READ PART 5 HERE, WHERE THE AUTHOR OF THE MODERNIZED TEXT REPONDED TO THESE POSTINGS.

I thought you did a FABULOUS job with it!! An awesome dramatic read and I believe you carried the message through the finish line in first place!
I also think there may have been a lot of stony hearts.
The first time I listened to “Sinners” I wept bitterly. And I my heart ached when I listened with you preaching it. That was the 2nd time I listened to it. It’s a message that doesn’t “tickle the ears” and it’s hard to hear, like watching the Passion of the Christ movie - I can’t bear myself to watch that again (though I know that movie is over-Catholicized).
I tell you, that message absolutely gripped my heart, and I am a Christian!
I’d rather fear God than go throughout life with no fear at all. The fear of God, to me, is the Law of God being that safety rail on a very high bridge over a chasm of deadly sharp rocks, thousands of feet below - mortal death (eternal Hell).
And there’s no safety net called purgatory.
Yeah I’d rather have that safety rail of God’s Law and the fear of God than dance on the edge.
Thank you Steve, for preaching God’s WORD!

I just did a tech pass on our “Fear Factor” for Season 3, it went right along with “Sinners at the Hands of an Angry God.”
In “Fear Factor” Ray and Kirk deal with the subject of the “fear of God” and the “fear of man” - the latter being about preaching/sharing the Gospel.
You will really like 3rd Season, Steve!

Powerful piece of work there, Pastor! Clear, concise and convicting as it could ever be. Very touching at the end. I don’t know of another kind of joy that could match witnessing God’s Spirit in the active work of regenerating a person’s heart right before your eyes such as what you saw. There are no words, I am sure.
A side note: I wouldn’t be surprised if we heard one day, that the likes of TD Jakes or Joel Osteen came out with a sermon called: “Winners in the Hands of a Nonjudgemental God”. It would continue to assist them in the filling of the pit Jonathan Edwards so aptly describes as ‘hell’.

Thanks to the both of you.
Paul, I’m looking forward to hearing from Joel and Jakes!

Steve:
I was delighted to hear of your preaching Edwards’ Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God in your local church. I especially praise God that it resulted in conversions and kigdom fruite. It was a truly humbling experience to modernize the text for the sermon back in 1996. My desire was to see people converted through the sermon as they were in Edwards’ day. I cannot express the joy in my heard for the response you saw that morning. It’s interesting that the response in the first three times you preached was not as widespread. That in some ways parallels Edwards’ own experience with the sermon. We believe that he preached the sermon at least one other time in a different location, or something similar to it. But he did not have the same response as he did in Enfield, CT. This just reminds me that salvation is of the Lord. Thank you for your courage and your creativity. All glory to God.
